High School Prep
High School Prep is a nationally recognized 14 month program that prepares academically gifted and economically disadvantaged African American, Hispanic, and Native American students to enter one of our partner consortium schools or exam-based high schools. Students begin taking classes on the University at Buffalo South Campus for 6 weeks in the summer after 7th grade. They continue the program on Tuesday and Wednesday nights after school and Saturdays during their 8th grade school year. The program concludes with a 6 week summer program after 8th grade.
Students will receive rigorous accelerated subject matter in English, Mathematics, Science, and American History. In addition, students will develop competencies in problem solving, writing, scientific inquiry, critical thinking, time management, computer and study skills.
Students and families must make a commitment to gain admittance and retention in the program. Students will have 3 to 4 hours of homework during the summer and will also have Prep homework during the school year. While this may seem like a burden, students who have completed the program routinely receive scholarships to outstanding high schools where they are extremely successful and prepared to go on to the college of their dreams.
